North Lake Sanctuary

Coming Fall 2026

Nestled in the heart of Hermann Park, North Lake Sanctuary is a six-acre natural peninsula surrounded on three sides by McGovern Lake and located between the Japanese Garden, the Sarofim Art Grove, and the Park’s native grass pocket prairie. Accessible by footbridges and winding pathways, the sanctuary has long been one of Hermann Park’s most peaceful destinations, offering sweeping lake views and exceptional opportunities to observe migratory birds and native wildlife.

Despite its natural beauty, North Lake Sanctuary has experienced years of deferred maintenance. Aging infrastructure, shoreline erosion, invasive plant species, and declining water quality have affected both the visitor experience and the ecological health of this unique landscape.

As one of the Park’s most ecologically diverse areas, North Lake Sanctuary contains prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats that support a wide variety of native plants and wildlife. Its central location and rich natural resources make it an ideal place to demonstrate Hermann Park Conservancy’s commitment to conservation, restoration, and environmental stewardship.

As part of the next phase of Hermann Park’s Master Plan, the Conservancy will continue implementing projects over the next decade that enhance the Park’s natural beauty, ecological health, and visitor experience. North Lake Sanctuary is among these important investments in the Park’s future.

Planned Improvements

  • Restore and stabilize the lake edge to address erosion while enhancing the natural shoreline.
  • Dredge the back channel of McGovern Lake to improve water quality and create healthier habitat for fish, birds, and aquatic life.
  • Expand native habitat through ecological restoration, including a new native planting area along the pathway bordering the Japanese Garden.
  • Improve and expand pedestrian pathways to increase accessibility and encourage exploration.
  • Enhance visitor amenities throughout the site.
  • Upgrade site drainage to improve long-term sustainability and resilience.

The restoration of North Lake Sanctuary will preserve one of Hermann Park’s most treasured natural landscapes while creating new opportunities for visitors to connect with nature, observe wildlife, and enjoy one of the Park’s most serene destinations for generations to come.
