The Japanese Garden in Hermann Park has been a place of beauty and reflection since 1992, when Houston’s Japanese community came together to offer a living gift to the city. Designed by renowned landscape architect Ken Nakajima, the Garden embodies harmony, peace, and friendship between Japan and the United States.
Hermann Park Conservancy is the nonprofit organization that partners with the City of Houston to care for and improve Hermann Park. Right now, we are focusing on restoring the Japanese Garden to Ken Nakajima’s original vision and planning for its long-term care. This is an important opportunity to hear from you about how you would most like to experience the Garden in the future.
Would you enjoy cultural activities such as Japanese crafts, art classes, or tea ceremonies? Quiet spaces for reflection or meditation? Seasonal events like lantern walks or cherry blossom celebrations? Your input will help us shape programming, explore sustainable support options, and deepen the Garden’s role as a cultural touchstone for Houston.
Maintaining this special place requires significant care and resources. As part of this outreach, we are also seeking feedback on ideas such as a modest admission fee or membership options that could sustain the Garden over time. Hermann Park Conservancy’s Yotsuba Circle already provides dedicated support to the Japanese Garden — we invite you to learn more and share if you might like to participate.
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey below. Your voice matters, and your ideas will help guide the next chapter for this treasured space.
