Understanding Hermann Park’s Position on the Proposed Ben Taub Expansion

Harris Health has proposed taking nearly nine acres of Hermann Park for an expansion of Ben Taub Hospital. We respect Harris Health’s mission and understand Houston’s healthcare crisis, but this is land that belongs to the people of Houston, and Park users and taxpayers deserve an equal or greater benefit in return.

The Conservancy has long envisioned thoughtful improvements for this area that would enhance public access, restore natural habitats, and create new spaces for visitors. You can click here to view the conceptual plans for this portion of the Park.

As stewards of Hermann Park, we believe that if public parkland is used for another public purpose, the Park and its users must receive clear, measurable benefits in return. The heirs to this land will be compensated, and so should the public. We are requesting a dedicated compensation package to offset the loss of land and public use. These funds would allow the Conservancy to realize components of our publicly informed master plan, investing in projects that would improve access and public amenities for all Park users for generations to come.
