Jose Marti
The bronze bust was created by Tony Lopez, a Cuban native. The City of Houston has owned the artwork since 1981. Marti worked toward the cause of Cuba’s independence. He died in battle in 1895. Lopez, the son and grandson of sculptors, fled Cuba when the Castro regime came into power and lived in Miami for the rest of his life.
