THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2010 – The majestic trees in Hermann Park are some of the most loved and iconic in Houston. Taking care of these aging beauties just got easier for Hermann Park Conservancy, thanks to a generous commitment of $75,000 over three years from KBR to support its urban reforestation program. This gift comes in addition to a special donation of $15,000 the Conservancy received as one of the benefitting organizations of KBR’s Master of the Green golf tournament.
Hermann Park Conservancy’s reforestation program is important for both preservation and environmental reasons. Hermann Park is home to over 7,000 trees, many of which are nearly a century old. Mature trees are not only aesthetic assets for Houston, creating a more beautiful and green environment, and also tools that significantly impact the environment of surrounding areas. Innumerable health and economic benefits result from large, thriving tree canopies, and with KBR’s assistance, the Conservancy will continue its work to preserve and monitor the trees in the Park. "KBR is honored to support the Hermann Park Conservancy’s reforestation project," said Richard Jennings, KBR’s senior manager of community relations and contributions. "Working to protect the environment is a primary goal at KBR and our partnership with the Conservancy will help further this mission.” KBR’s philanthropic focus is on education, environment, health, and those areas that support their employees’ activities and interests. This year, KBR received a nearly 300% increase in requests from nonprofits and educational organizations for its 2010 Philanthropic Giving Plan consideration. KBR was able to increase its commitments by 20% and chose the Conservancy’s reforestation program as one of the lucky recipients.
