Volunteers Needed for National Public Lands Day in Hermann Park

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2009 – Hermann Park Conservancy is seeking two hundred volunteers to participate in National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Hermann Park will be one of 2,000 sites to receive attention and care thanks to the event, which constitutes the largest public service initiative for public lands in the country. “Hermann Park Conservancy is excited to engage the community in this opportunity,” said Doreen Stoller, executive director of the Conservancy. “Through National Public Lands Day, volunteers will not only be able to see the impressive value of their collective time and effort here in Hermann Park, but they will be a part of a broader statement about the importance of public spaces to communities nationwide.”

National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year, over 120,000 volunteers worked in over 1,800 locations and in every state. Not only does this event present an opportunity to improve public lands for outdoor recreation, but it also helps educate Americans about critical environmental and natural resources issues and the need for shared stewardship. “This event is a great fit for Hermann Park,” noted Sam Molina, volunteer and education coordinator for the Conservancy. “Hermann Park counts on 20,000 hours provided by volunteers every year to keep its 445 acres properly maintained.”

National Public Lands Day in Hermann Park is open to volunteers of all ages. Volunteers participating in the event will help improve the Park by removing invasive plants in Hermann Park’s Bayou Parkland area, an 80-acre natural area of the Park known for its wooded forest and shaded trails. These common invasive plants grow quickly, endangering trees, covering trails, and threatening wildlife habitat. Together, volunteers will help keep Hermann Park’s trees and native plants healthy and thriving.

This family-friendly volunteer opportunity will begin at 9 a.m. on September 26 in Hermann Park’s Bayou Parkland. To sign up to volunteer, please contact Sam Molina, volunteer and education coordinator, at volunteer@hermannpark.org. More information, including details on shift times, proper attire, and parking may be found on the Conservancy’s website, www.hermannpark.org.
