Centennial Campaign
Adopted in 1995, Hermann Park’s master plan identified $70 million in needed park improvements. The Centennial Campaign, led by Hermann Park Conservancy, in partnership with the City of Houston, aims to complete the necessary improvements identified in the master plan by the Park's centennial in 2014. (Click here to download a copy of the master plan for Hermann Park.)
During the first phase of the Campaign, which was completed in 2006, nearly $30 million of these improvements were put into the ground. In 2007, the Conservancy launched Phase 2, and is actively planning, fundraising for, and carrying out many transformative projects in Hermann Park.
Phase 1 Successes
- The construction of the "Heart of the Park", which includes the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool; the Molly Ann Smith and Sara H. and John H. Lindsey Plazas; and the enlargement, renovation and beautification of McGovern Lake to include three new islands, which serve as bird and wetland habitat areas
- The completion of a new Houston Zoo West Entrance facility and plaza and the beautification of N. MacGregor Street
- The expansion and renovation of Miller Outdoor Theatre
- The comprehensive renovation of the Hermann Park Golf Course (completed by BSL Golf Corporation)
- Improvements to Bayou Parkland, a 80-acre natural area in the Park
Phase 2 Progress
- The transformation of Lake Plaza, to include public restrooms, a cafe (opening this fall), Kinder Station (the main train station), Conservancy gift shop, pedal boat lagoon, The Tiffany & Co. Foundation Bridge, McGovern Promenade, and The Brown Foundation, Inc. volunteer and maintenance building
- The renovation and expansion of Hermann Park Railroad, to include a new train, and the creation of Kinder Station and three stops to permit users to hop on or off at different points of interest in the Park and accommodate METRORail riders
- The installation of the Martin Luther King, Jr., statue in the Garden Center
- The renovation of the Japanese Garden, including the planting of a tea garden with bamboo fencing and a pondside wisteria trellis
- The renovation of the Garden Center
